A Station in the Journey of a Resistor
✍️ Qasim Salman Al-Aboudi

Izz al‑Din Salim is considered one of the most prominent intellectual and political Iraqi figures after 2003. His real name is Abdul Zahra Uthman Mohammed. He was a leader in the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq and was known for his intellectual and religious culture, as well as his writings on Islamic and political thought.

He assumed the presidency of the Iraqi Governing Council in 2004 during the transitional period following the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime. He was regarded as a calm and balanced figure, inclined towards dialogue and institutional work rather than confrontational rhetoric.

Among his most notable characteristics:

His interest in thought and culture alongside political work.

His proposal for building a state based on pluralism and national partnership.

His closeness to both academic and religious circles simultaneously.

His possession of a calm, non‑populist style in politics.

He was assassinated on 17 May 2004 by a bomb that targeted his convoy near the Green Zone in Baghdad. His assassination was one of the prominent events of Iraq's transitional period at that time.

Many of his opponents and allies alike described him as one of the few figures who combined "intellectual work" with "executive political work." For this reason, his legacy continues to be respected by a segment of Iraqis, especially within Shiite Islamic and political circles.

The most important of his writings (may God be pleased with him):

Dialogue on the Naming of the Islamic Movement – in which he discussed the nature of Islamic movements, their names, and their intellectual and political goals.

Women between Sharia and Life – an examination of the status and rights of women within the Islamic vision.

Milestones on the Path of Islamic Thought – a collection of intellectual visions addressing issues of renaissance and Islamic identity.

Islamic Reflections on Society and History – articles and studies on reading society and history from an Islamic perspective.

Studies in Contemporary Islamic Thought – addressing the challenges of modern Islamic thought and its relationship to political and social reality.

He also had numerous articles and lectures published in Iraqi and Iranian Islamic magazines and newspapers during the period of the Iraqi opposition before 2003. He was known for his calm intellectual style and his attempt to combine the religious dimension with realistic political work.
